Helping you to drive safely

When you apply for your theory or practical driving tests, make sure that you are using the official site which is direct.gov.uk as there are a number of sites which will act as an agent and book your test for you; and charge a administration fee of around £20 on top of the actual cost of booking it yourself on the DSA site. The link below will take you to the correct direct.gov.uk site.

If you are going to learn to drive, the first thing you need to do is apply for your provisional driving licence unless you already have licence which will allow you to drive as a provisional licence holder in a car. A motorbike or tractor licence are examples.
If you need to apply for a new provisional licence, click on the link below for more information. You can apply up to three months before your seventeenth birthday.
To drive safely and correctly, you must learn the Highway Code. Clicking on the link below or the image on the right will take you to an online Highway Code.
It is normal to feel slightly nervous when taking the practical test so in addition to driving lessons with a qualified instructor, get as much private practice as you can  to gain the maaximum amount of experience before the exam day. Remember that the car which you use for practice must be insured for you to drive and the person accompanying you must be over the age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full licence, in the relevant vehicle category, for three years.

Choosing a driving instructor
What do you know about choosing an instructor and the qualifications they have? The link below will provide you with useful information about Driving Standartds Agency Approved Driving Instructors as well as links to the DSA and DIA Codes of Practice
The Driving Standards Agency Code of Practice
The Driving Instructors Association Code of Practice
Clicking on the two links below will show you the two professional codes of practice which I abide by when providing driver training.
After you have passed your driving test and obtained a full licence, you should consider taking a Pass Plus course or at least having some motorway lessons to provide additional  experience which will help to make you into a safer driver.
Remember the New Drivers Act and that for the first two years after passing your driving test you are in a probationery period which will cause you to lose your licence and have to start all over again if you collect more than six penalty points during that time.
